In 1952, when he was traveling abroad, the United States Attorney General stated that Chaplin (a British subject) would not be allowed to return to America without a hearing on charges of "moral turpitude and Communist sympathies." Chaplin, blacklisted from making films in Hollywood, responded with this movie. The film stars Chaplin as the deposed king of Estrovia who flees to America where he is tormented by McCarthy style investigations.
